Job Overview
We are looking for an Intermediate or Senior Underwriter to support our growing Aviation team. This individual will play a key role in driving the company’s growth and profitability. This position requires assessing the acceptability of business opportunities in line with company guidelines, including reviewing and pricing new submissions, renewal business, and endorsements. The successful candidates will leverage their expertise, creativity, and entrepreneurial mindset to develop strong broker relationships and grow their book of business.
Our Underwriters work closely with experienced practice leaders, managers, and executives, supported by an extensive product range, ample capacity, and the empowerment needed to succeed. In collaboration with colleagues and management, they deliver value-added expertise and exceptional service to our broker partners.
This is a hybrid/remote position based in Burlington, ON, but will also be open to candidates in other provinces with strong Aviation Underwriting experience.
Responsibilities
In this position you will:
- Underwrite renewal and new business for submissions with the intent to offer insurance solutions while working towards the organization’s financial goals and growth.
- Ensure careful evaluation, assessment and quoting of all new business and renewal applications as assigned to you.
- Work within guidelines set out by authority limits, rating guides and guidance of leadership team to negotiate and define the specific terms of insurance policies.
- Focus on customer service by liaising with brokers and key stakeholders to build strong relationships.
- Keep up to date and detailed records in underwriting and administration systems.
- Be an integral team member by supporting all areas of the Underwriting department.
- Monitor GWP and revenue growth on renewal and business, including accountability for quote-to-bind ratios and loss-ratios
- Monitor the success of the current rating guide and auto calculations for rating in Underwriting system and suggest rate changes to leadership team for review, as needed.
- Provide back-up to other members of the Underwriting team when they are out of the office.
- Contribute to the leadership team’s overall effort and direction of the company.
- Occasional travel for broker meetings, conferences, and team meetings. You must have access to a safe and reliable vehicle for transportation purposes as you are required to travel for occasional meetings.
- Other more extensive travel may include attending team gatherings, conferences and client/broker site visits as required.
Qualifications and Characteristics
You’re a good fit if you have:
- 5+ years of insurance underwriting/broking experience with excellent knowledge of aviation insurance policies and ability to relate policy provision to the loss exposures.
- A valid RIBO, or General Insurance Broker License in the province you reside, and willing to obtain other licenses as required.
- Exceptional customer service skills and ability to develop strong relationships.
- Demonstrate ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently and show initiative.
- Ability to problem-solve and make decisions.
- Impeccable attention to detail.
- Above-average computer proficiency in Microsoft Office and hands-on experience working in a paperless environment with “smart systems”.
- Flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities, deadlines, tasks, and technology.

Salary Range
The expected salary range for this position is from $65,000 – $75,000+ commensurate with experience. SPG Canada and affiliated brands are proud to offer comprehensive benefit and total compensation packages which include extended health and dental benefits, disability insurance, RRSP matching, paid time off benefits, and a variety of potential bonus opportunities.
