More markets doesn’t mean easier placement.
It means the call you make first matters more.
Each edition, a member of SPG Canada’s leadership team shares their read on the Canadian specialty market — what’s shifting, what it means for brokers, and where we’re directing our focus.
When fifteen markets are competing for the same risk, the broker’s challenge isn’t access to capacity. It’s knowing who to call first, and trusting that the answer you get back actually reflects someone who understands the exposure.
New MGAs, expanded facilities, insurtechs, and domestic carriers pushing into specialty lines are all competing for the same business. The options list keeps growing. In a soft market, that sounds like good news for everyone. In practice, it raises the stakes on judgment.
Competitive across the board, and deeper where it matters
Whether the risk is standard or specialty, brokers get the same thing from us: an underwriter who knows the line, responds with substance, and can give a real answer. The complexity of the risk changes, but the quality of the engagement doesn’t.
The market is not uniform right now. Clean, straightforward risks are seeing meaningful pricing relief and broad options. Accounts with unusual exposures, non-standard risk profiles, and losses that don't fit a standard form require something more than competitive terms. They require an underwriter who has seen that risk before and can move on it with confidence.
For brokers with harder-to-place accounts, the soft market label can be misleading. The options that exist for a standard risk don’t always exist for a specialty one. That gap is where deep underwriting expertise earns its keep: not just in offering competitive terms but in being able to engage seriously with the accounts that require genuine judgment.
Pattern recognition is the differentiator that doesn’t get talked about enough
In a crowded market, speed matters. Brokers consistently tell us (and the data backs this up) that delays in quotes and inconsistent follow-up are their most common frustrations. We take that seriously, and we work hard to respond with substance and on a timeline that’s actually useful.
But for complex risks, what matters alongside speed is whether the underwriter reviewing the file has seen that risk before. Pattern recognition, built through years of writing niche lines, is what allows a specialist market to move with both speed and confidence on the accounts that others might find unfamiliar.
When something unusual comes across our desk, it gets a real underwriter, not a template response. A technology company with a professional liability exposure that crosses into cyber, a contractor with an unusual project scope, a hospitality risk with non-standard operations. These are the accounts where having written the line for years is what allows us to move quickly and give brokers a real answer rather than a holding response.
Being reachable is a choice, not a feature
One of the things brokers tell us they value, and one of the things we’re most deliberate about, is direct access to underwriters. A person who knows the file, has read the submission, and can give a straight answer on where things stand.
In a market where capacity is abundant and competition is intense, the experience of working with an MGA matters as much as the coverage terms. We want brokers to know that when they submit a risk to SPG Canada, there’s an underwriter on the other side who is engaged, accountable, and reachable throughout the process, not just at the quoting stage.
A soft market is the right moment to ask harder questions
When pricing converges across markets, the differentiation moves to structure: how a policy is built, what it actually covers in a claim scenario, and whether the coverage holds up when it’s tested. The soft market is producing real creativity in coverage design, and that’s a genuine opportunity for brokers and their clients.
It’s worth asking whether a client’s program is as complete as it should be. Limit adequacy, coverage gaps, and the practical benefits of consolidating lines with a single market are conversations brokers are well-positioned to lead right now. Clients are receptive, options are broader, and the ability to package lines and increase limits without a significant premium impact is genuinely available in a way it hasn’t been for several years.
SPG Canada is built for exactly that conversation, with the breadth of appetite and depth of specialist lines to build a complete program: single market, higher limits, across commercial, personal, and specialty risks. Brokers who haven’t tested what we can put together for their clients may be surprised by what’s possible.
Continuity from placement to claim
Having underwriting and claims under the same roof means brokers get continuity across the life of the policy. The people who understand the coverage intent are connected to the people managing it when something goes wrong. For specialty lines, where the facts of a loss and the nuance of the coverage language both matter, that integration delivers real value that often only becomes visible at the claim stage.
It also means that when a broker calls with a coverage question mid-term (not a claim, not a renewal, just a question) there’s someone on the other end who can answer it. That’s not a small thing. It’s the difference between a relationship and a transaction.
The broker who can call their underwriter to think through a coverage question, not just request a quote, is better positioned to deliver for their client. We’re here to be that partner, on every account, and especially on the ones where it matters most.
