Job Overview
We are seeking a Natural Resources Underwriting Manager to lead one of the most established and respected underwriting units in Canada. As the first MGA in the country to specialize in Mining and Forestry, our Natural Resources team has been in continuous operation for over 20 years and currently manages a portfolio exceeding $40 million in resource-based premium. With specialized wordings, sector-specific rating models, and a team of experienced underwriters, the unit is well-positioned for continued growth.
As Manager, you will be responsible for directing all activities within the Natural Resources segment, ensuring maximum efficiency, productivity, growth, and profitability. You will leverage existing broker relationships, technical expertise, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit to build and evolve the portfolio. Working alongside a highly skilled team of underwriters, practice leaders, and executives, you will have access to a wide range of products, strong market capacity, and the autonomy to drive results.
You will collaborate closely with colleagues and management to deliver value-added expertise and exceptional service to our broker partners.
This is a hybrid position in our Sudbury, Ontario office.
Responsibilities
- Developing and executing a business plan for the success of your segment, including using internal and external data sources;
- Partnering with leaders to analyze management reports, identify emerging trends and opportunities, and pricing and underwriting strategies;
- Serving as a point of contact for brokers and internal colleagues;
- Attracting and retaining talented underwriters and underwriting assistants;
- Leading, training, coaching and mentoring a team of commercial underwriters toward continuous improvement and goal achievement;
- Managing and establishing underwriting standards, best practices, and audits within your segment;
- Maintaining a compliance culture with underwriters, ensuring work is completed in accordance with established corporate guidelines and delegated authority parameters;
- Developing strategic plans with key brokers and business partners;
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external parties, including attending industry related seminars and networking events as necessary;
- Act as a technical subject matter expert and referral resource for underwriters.
Qualifications and Characteristics
You’re a good fit if you have:
- A minimum of 5 years of P&C underwriting experience, with a preference in Natural Resource Underwriting;
- Experience in property, equipment, liability, and E&O plus other coverages is an asset;
- A minimum of 3 year in a leadership role;
- An advanced understanding of commercial underwriting and the ability to apply this knowledge in day-to-day practice;
- An entrepreneurial spirit with strong selling and negotiation skills and a demonstrated ability to generate revenue growth;
- A passion for delivering exceptional customer experiences and value in every interaction;
- Insurance designation preferred; and
- A Level 2 broker license/RIBO license or the ability to obtain this license within 90 days of hire.
